Everyone wants the moss gone by the weekend. The quick way and the right way happen to be the same thing, and it is not a pressure washer.
The Short Version
- Hand scraping shifts the bulk of the moss in a single visit, which is the genuinely fast part.
- A low-pressure soft wash afterwards kills what is left in the tile and slows regrowth.
- Gutters, valleys and downpipes must be cleared in the same visit or the job undoes itself.
- Pressure washing looks faster and costs you tiles, mortar and years of roof life.

What is the fastest way to remove moss from a roof?
The fastest safe way to remove moss from a roof is to scrape it off by hand from a scaffold or tower, clear the gutters as you go, then follow with a low-pressure soft wash to kill what is left in the pores of the tile. Fast, but never pressure washed.

Hand scraping clears the bulk in one visit
Moss sits on the surface and in the laps of the tiles, not inside them. Once a man is up there with a scraper and a brush, the thick growth comes away in sheets, and a whole roof slope can be cleared in a day or two depending on size and pitch. That is genuinely the quick route, because nothing else removes that volume of material in one go.
The mistake people make is reaching for a pressure washer because it looks faster from the ground. It is not. A lance drives water up under the tiles, strips the surface off concrete tiles so they hold moss worse next year, breaks nibs, and lifts old mortar out of ridges and hips. We soft wash and hand scrape and we do not pressure wash roofs, and that position has not changed in thirty six years on Surrey roofs. Whether you need a roof moss removal or roof moss removal services Guildford, we cover the whole area.
Hand work also means the roof gets looked at properly while the moss is coming off. Slipped tiles, cracked verge mortar, a hairline in the flashing, all of it shows up under a scraper in a way it never shows up under a jet of water.

Gutters and valleys come first, not last
Any moss you take off a roof has to land somewhere, and if the gutters and valleys are not cleared as part of the same visit the whole job comes back on you within weeks. A slope's worth of scraped moss will block a gutter outlet solidly, and then water tracks back behind the fascia, over the wall head, or into the valley boards.
So the order matters. Clear the ridge and the upper courses, work down, take the debris out of the valley by hand rather than flushing it, then finish by clearing and flow testing the gutters and downpipes. Rainwater sizing is a real calculation, set out in BS EN 12056, and a gutter that was borderline to begin with will not cope with a bootful of wet moss sitting in the outlet. Whether you need a roof moss removal or roof moss removal services Woking, we cover the whole area.
Downpipes are worth a mention on their own. A blocked shoe or a packed swan neck will hold water against the brickwork all winter and show up indoors as damp long after everyone has forgotten the roof was cleaned.
The soft wash is what makes it last
Scraping takes the moss away. It does not take away the spores sitting in the surface of a porous concrete tile, and that is why a scraped-only roof can look green again inside two seasons. A low-pressure soft wash, applied after the mechanical clean and left to work, kills the residual growth and slows the regrowth considerably.
Low pressure is the point. The chemistry does the work, not the force. That is gentler on ageing tiles, on lead flashings, and on the mortar bedding at ridge and hip than anything driven at high pressure, and it does not force water into laps that were never designed to take it. If you are searching for someone to soft wash a roof near you, we work across Surrey and the Wey Valley and can usually get a survey booked quickly.
- North-facing slopes hold damp longest and always regrow first.
- Overhanging trees keep a slope shaded and wet, and no clean will outlast unpruned branches.
- Concrete interlocking tiles go porous with age and hold moss far more readily than slate.
- Blocked valleys stay wet permanently, so moss returns there whatever you do to the open slope.
We also do not hard sell coatings on the back of a clean. If a roof needs a coating sold to it to look acceptable, it usually needs something else entirely, and we would rather say so.
When a clean is the wrong answer
Sometimes the honest answer is that moss is the least of the problem. If the roof is a fifty year old concrete tile covering with laminating tiles, perished felt and nail fatigue through the battens, cleaning it will loosen more than it fixes. Fixings and wind uplift are covered by BS 5534, and a roof that no longer holds its tiles reliably needs a re-roof discussion, not a scraper.
That is a judgement made from a proper survey, free, with a drone view where the pitch makes it sensible, and put in writing as a fixed price with no obligation. If a smaller repair will do, that is what gets quoted. If the moss is genuinely just moss, and on most roofs it is, then the hand scrape and soft wash is the fast route and it is finished in one visit.
Whatever we do gets the same twenty five year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before the team leaves, and it covers repairs and cleaning work as well as new roofs. Our own roofers do the work, the site is left tidy, and the phone is answered by a real person whatever the hour.
