Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, and on a roof cleaning job that experience is mostly about knowing what not to do: what a pressure lance does under a tile lap, which clay tiles crack if you walk them, and when moss is hiding a real problem rather than just looking untidy.
The Essentials
- Moss comes off by hand and by low-pressure soft wash, never by pressure washer.
- Gutters are cleared and flushed, and all debris is bagged and taken away.
- Method is matched to the covering, whether that's concrete interlocking, clay or natural slate.
- Every job carries a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before we leave.
We're family-run, fully insured with Public Liability cover, and the roofers who turn up are our own team, not subcontracted strangers. If the clean turns up rotten boards or failed gutter runs, we also handle fascias, soffits & cladding services Ash & Ash Vale, so you get one straight answer rather than three separate opinions.

Roof Moss Removal Methods
Moss removal on an Ash or Ash Vale roof means lifting the growth off by hand and then soft washing, at low pressure, so the tiles and the fixings underneath are left alone. That's the whole method, and it's the same one we've used for years.
Moss holds water against the tile. Water sitting on a tile in February freezes, expands and starts breaking the surface open. Lichen roots into the glaze on older clay and algae darkens the whole slope. Once the moss mat gets thick enough it slides down and packs into the gutters, and then the water goes somewhere it shouldn't.
We start on the ridge and work down, scraping the growth off the tile face and out of the laps with hand tools. Nothing is blasted. We don't pressure wash roofs, and we won't, because a lance driven under a tile lap pushes water straight onto the felt and loosens the nibs and nail fixings that hold everything in place. After the scraping, a low-pressure soft wash treats what the scraper can't reach and slows the regrowth down.
We also don't hard sell roof coatings. If your roof is sound and just dirty, cleaning it is the job. If it isn't sound, we'll say that instead of painting over it.

Roof Tile Types and Suitable Cleaning for Ash & Ash Vale Homes
Ash and Ash Vale run from the older brick cottages near Ash Church and the shops along Ash Street through to the post-war and modern estates spreading out towards Ash Vale station and the Basingstoke Canal. That range means several very different roof coverings inside a couple of miles, and they don't all take the same treatment.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Most of the newer housing off Vale Road and the estates around Wharf Road carries concrete interlocking tiles. They're tough, but the sand-cement face weathers open with age and holds moss in the texture. We scrape those gently and keep the wash pressure low, because scouring the face just gives the next lot of moss more to grip.
Clay tiles and natural slate
Older properties near Ash Church and the lanes towards Ash Green often have plain clay tiles or Welsh slate. Clay is brittle at the edges and slate splits along the grain, so foot traffic matters more than the cleaning does. We work off ladders and staging rather than walking a slate slope, and we treat lichen patiently instead of forcing it.
Extensions, garages and low-pitch bays
Plenty of homes here have a flat or shallow rear extension collecting everything the main roof sheds. Those need clearing too, or the debris just sits and holds damp against the upstand. We check them as part of the same visit.
Gutters, Debris and Waste Removal
Cleaning a roof and leaving the moss in the gutters is half a job. Everything we take off the tiles has to come down, so we sheet the ground, bag the debris and take it away with us.
Gutters get cleared and flushed afterwards, and we check the falls and outlets while we're up there. BS EN 12056 covers rainwater sizing, and it's a fair reminder that a gutter part-full of moss is no longer the gutter that was designed for the roof. Once the water starts running over the front edge it lands on the fascia board and the wall below, and that's where the real bills start.
If we find rot in the boards, split joints or a bay that's dropped, we'll tell you what we've seen and what it needs. No pressure attached.
Manual Scraping and Soft Washing
These are the two halves of the work, and it's worth knowing what each one actually does.
Manual scraping
Hand scraping takes the bulk off. It's slow, it's methodical, and it's the only way to shift a thick moss mat without forcing water into places it shouldn't go. We work down the slope in bands so nothing gets missed and nothing gets walked back over.
Low-pressure soft washing
Soft washing follows the scraping. Low pressure, applied evenly, lifting the algae film and the residue the scraper leaves behind. It cleans the tile without stripping it. Drying time depends on the weather more than anything, and in a Surrey autumn you'll want a settled few days.
When cleaning isn't the answer
Sometimes we get up there and find the tiles are spalling, the battens are soft or the nail fixings have gone. Cleaning a roof in that state is money spent twice. Whether you need roof cleaning in Ash & Ash Vale or a new roof replacement in Ash & Ash Vale, we cover the whole area, and we'll tell you honestly which one you're looking at. If a smaller repair does the job, that's what we'll quote.
Safety, Access and Property Protection
Access here is usually straightforward, though the terraces towards Ash Vale station and the tighter turnings off Lysons Avenue can mean a scaffold tower or a careful ladder set rather than a full scaffold. We work it out on the survey, not on the day.
Before anything comes off the roof we cover what's below: patios, conservatory roofs, planting, cars, drives. Sheeted, then checked again before we leave. Wey Valley Roofing carries Public Liability Insurance, and the roofers on your property are our own people who've worked Surrey roofs for years, not a crew we've never met.
Wondering whether the moss will just come straight back? Some regrowth is normal on a shaded north slope, but a properly scraped and soft washed roof stays clear for years rather than months, and a gutter clear each autumn keeps it that way.
Every job we finish, cleaning included, carries the same 25-year written workmanship guarantee. It's handed to you in writing before the van leaves, and it covers repairs and roof work, not only new roofs. Scott has been on Surrey roofs for more than 36 years and still answers the phone himself, which is usually the quickest way to find out where you stand.
