Don't Just Take Our Word For It

The advice on this page comes from the same team Surrey homeowners rate five stars on Google, in Bramley, Shamley Green and across the wider county. After more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, most of our guttering systems work still comes the old-fashioned way: a neighbour pointing over the fence and saying give them a call. You can read all our reviews, word for word.

Four metres sounds like a simple measurement, but the channel itself is the cheapest part of the job.

The Short Version

  • Fittings, brackets, outlets and labour account for most of the cost on a short run.
  • Material choice moves the figure further than length: uPVC, cast aluminium and seamless aluminium all sit differently.
  • Sizing and fall must suit the roof area draining into the run, following BS EN 12056.
  • Access height, downpipe routing and the condition of the fascia behind the gutter decide the final price.

Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs and still answers the phone himself, with a 25 year written workmanship guarantee handed over before the team leaves. Whether you need guttering systems or guttering systems in Godalming, we cover the whole area.

Guttering Systems

How much is 4 metres of guttering?

Four metres of guttering is a short run, usually one side of a small extension, porch or garage. The cost depends far more on the material, the brackets, the outlet and the access than on the four metres itself, because fittings and labour make up most of any small guttering job.

Ring 07428 300474 and Scott will look at the run, the fascia behind it and the downpipe, then put a fixed price for your four metres in writing.

What four metres of guttering actually includes

Nobody buys four metres of channel on its own and ends up with working guttering. A four metre run needs a stop end at one side, an outlet where the downpipe drops, a union if the run is made from more than one length, and brackets spaced tightly enough to hold the channel in a straight fall without sagging in the middle. On a two length run you also want the joint sitting between brackets rather than hanging over one.

The other half of the job is the fascia the guttering hangs from. Old guttering is often removed to reveal soft timber, a rotted fascia board or nail holes that will not hold a bracket. Fixing brackets into failing timber is how a run starts dropping again within a couple of winters, so the board gets checked, and where it is soft it gets replaced before anything new goes up. That is normal on older Surrey properties and it is the single most common reason a small guttering job turns out to involve more than four metres of plastic.

Whether you need guttering systems or guttering systems in Guildford, we cover the whole area, and the survey is where the fascia gets looked at properly rather than guessed at from the ground.

Why the material changes the figure more than the length

A four metre run in standard half round uPVC sits at the bottom end. Deep flow and square profiles cost more because the section carries more water and the fittings are heavier. Cast aluminium and seamless aluminium sit higher again, and seamless is a different proposition altogether: the channel is rolled on site to the exact length of the run, so a four metre elevation gets one continuous piece with no joint in it at all. Joints are where guttering leaks, so removing them removes the usual failure point.

Cast iron, or the heritage look, is heavier and needs stronger fixings and more careful bracket support. On a listed or period frontage it may be the only sensible match. Colour matters too. A standard black or brown uPVC run is off the shelf. A colour matched aluminium run to suit existing fascias and cladding is made to order.

Whether you need guttering systems or guttering systems in Woking, we cover the whole area, and the material recommendation follows the building rather than the price list.

Sizing and fall decide whether a short run works

A four metre run still has to shift the water off the area of roof draining into it. Rainwater sizing is set out in BS EN 12056, which relates the catchment area of the roof to the channel capacity and the number of outlets. Small runs get this wrong surprisingly often. A half round gutter under a wide, steeply pitched slope with only one outlet will overshoot in heavy rain, and no amount of cleaning fixes it, because the channel was never big enough.

Fall is the other half. Guttering is set with a shallow, consistent slope towards the outlet. Set it dead level and water stands in it, silt settles, moss takes hold and the joints start weeping. Set it too steep on a short run and the channel looks wrong against the fascia line and the water runs past the outlet. On four metres there is very little length to hide an error in, so the bracket line gets set with a string line rather than by eye.

Where the downpipe goes matters as well. A new outlet position may mean a new downpipe route, a shoe at the bottom and a connection into an existing gully or soakaway. That is often the part people have not budgeted for. Full detail on materials, profiles and seamless work sits on our guttering systems page.

What makes a short run cost more than expected

Four metres of guttering at ground floor level on a bungalow, reached off a short ladder or a low tower, is a straightforward morning. The same four metres at second floor level over a conservatory roof, a narrow side passage or a neighbour's boundary is a different job, because the access equipment has to be right before anyone touches the gutter.

  • Height and access. Scaffold or a tower where a ladder is not safe or not stable enough to work from.
  • Obstructions below. Conservatories, glass roofs, oil tanks and planting all restrict where equipment can stand.
  • Fascia and soffit condition. Soft timber, missing soffit or a rotted corner found once the old guttering comes off.
  • Roof edge detail. Missing eaves protection, tiles hanging short of the channel, or water tracking behind the gutter rather than into it.
  • Downpipe work. New pipe, brackets, offsets and the connection into the drain below.
  • Joining to existing runs. Matching an old profile that is no longer made, which sometimes means replacing a longer stretch to keep it watertight.

None of that is a reason to inflate a small job. It is the reason a fixed price in writing beats a figure per metre. The elevation gets surveyed, including a drone view where the eaves are awkward to see, and the price covers the channel, the fittings, the brackets, the fascia work if any is needed and the labour. If four metres is genuinely all that needs doing, that is what gets quoted, and the 25 year written workmanship guarantee covers it the same as any larger job.

Ring 07428 300474 and Scott will look at the run, the fascia behind it and the downpipe, then put a fixed price for your four metres in writing.
