Peeling paint on the eaves, a gutter tipping forward, and a green streak running down the wall below it. On Aldershot terraces, postwar semis and estate housing, that pattern turns up every winter, and it almost always starts with a fascia board that has been wet for years.
Summary
- Old boards come off so the rafter feet can be seen, not capped over and forgotten.
- Rotten timber is cut back and spliced with treated wood before anything new is fixed.
- Soffits are ventilated to BS 5250 so the roof space keeps breathing.
- Gutters are rehung to a measured fall and sized to the roof they drain.
- uPVC or aluminium, with profiles matched to period and modern frontages.
- A 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over in writing before we leave.

Fascias, Soffits & Cladding Services
Roofline boards get ignored until they sag, stain or drop a lump of wet timber into the border. By then the gutter has usually been running down the wall for a season or two. That is the awkward part of this job: the damage you can see is rarely the damage that matters. We take the old boards off and look at what is behind them before anyone quotes a colour.
Aldershot has a wide spread of housing, and the roofline shape changes with it. Victorian and Edwardian terraces with deep overhangs and timber bargeboards. Interwar and postwar semis with tile-hung or rendered gables. Ex-military and later estate housing with long, plain runs of eaves. Newer estate homes where the first-generation plastic has gone chalky and brittle. We work on all of them. The shape of the job changes, the method does not.
Fascias and soffits
The fascia carries the gutter and closes the rafter feet. The soffit boards the underside of the overhang and controls airflow into the roof. Get either wrong and the roof pays for it. On a terrace we work board by board off the front, because there is nowhere else to go. On a detached or semi with a decent gable we can run longer lengths and keep joints down.
Cladding
Cladding covers gable apex panels, dormer cheeks, porch returns and the odd upper storey where the render has had enough. It has to shed water and drain behind. Fixed flat to a damp wall it traps moisture. We batten, ventilate and detail the bottom edge so it drips clear.
What comes off with it
Gutters, brackets, downpipes, ventilation strips, dry verge, sometimes the last two courses of tiles. It is one system. Replacing part of it and leaving the rest is how people end up paying twice.

Installation Process and Site Survey
Most quotes for roofline work are guessed from the pavement. That is why they change once the scaffold is up. We would rather look properly first, including a drone view where the ground angle hides the eaves.
The survey checks rafter feet for softness, the wall plate where it is visible, existing gutter falls, and whether the roof is getting any air at all. Then you get a fixed price in writing, no obligation and no charge for it. If sound boards only need a repair and a new gutter run, we say that instead of selling a full replacement.
On site the sequence is fixed. Gutters and downpipes off. Old boards stripped, not covered. Timber inspected and any rotten rafter feet cut back and spliced with treated timber. New fascia fixed to sound wood. Soffit fitted with ventilation. Gutter rehung to a proper fall. Waste taken away.
Access is the usual constraint. Terraces with no side access mean everything goes through the front or over the roof. Corner plots on busy Aldershot roads mean scaffold that does not block a footway. Rear elevations backing onto alleys or garages need planning before day one, not on the morning. We work that out at survey.
A run of fascias and soffits on a standard semi is normally a two to three day job. A full house with cladding and new guttering runs longer. Weather moves it. We tell you rather than leaving you guessing.

Guttering, Bargeboards and Downpipes
New white fascia with the old sagging gutter clipped back on it is a waste of everyone's time. The gutter is the reason the boards rotted. If it holds water, joints leak or the fall runs the wrong way, that starts again behind new plastic.
We rehang gutters to a measured fall and size the system to the roof area it drains, working to BS EN 12056 for rainwater sizing. Steep pitches and long slopes throw more water than people expect, and an undersized gutter overshoots in the sort of downpour that arrives twice a summer. Seamless aluminium is worth considering on long runs, because the joints are where the trouble starts.
Bargeboards take the worst of it. They sit on the exposed gable, unsheltered, and on older Aldershot property they are often original timber with decades of paint holding them together. Downpipes matter as much. A pipe discharging onto a path instead of a gully will find the wall eventually.

Ventilation and Rot Prevention in Aldershot
Here is the failure we see most. Someone caps or replaces the roofline, seals the eaves solid, and two winters later the loft is damp and the rafter ends are black. The boards look fine. The roof underneath is not.
A pitched roof needs air moving through it. Blocking the eaves stops that, and the moisture that used to leave through the overhang condenses on the cold felt instead. We ventilate soffits to suit the roof in front of us and work to BS 5250 on ventilation and condensation. On older properties with bitumen felt and no ventilation designed in at all, that often means adding airflow that was never there.
Rot prevention is not a coating. It is dry timber, moving air and water going where it should. Loft insulation stuffed hard into the eaves is another common one, and it undoes the ventilation you just paid for. We pull it back and fit trays where needed.
Damp timber does not recover on its own.

uPVC and Aluminium Materials for Aldershot Homes
Maintenance-free is a word the industry likes more than it should. UPVC does not rot and does not need painting, and on most Aldershot homes it is the sensible choice: full replacement boards in white, black, grey or a woodgrain foil for period frontages. It will move with heat, so it wants fixing and jointing properly rather than tight and hard.
Aluminium suits long runs, exposed gables and anything where a crisp line matters. Powder coated, stiff, and it will not sag between brackets. It costs more. On a plain semi it is usually unnecessary, and we will say so.
Whether you need fascias, soffits & cladding in Aldershot or chimney work in Aldershot, we cover the whole area, and it is common for the two to come together on a gable end where the flashing and the bargeboard meet.
Period and terraced frontages
Deep timber fascias, moulded profiles and ornate bargeboards. Plain flat plastic looks wrong on these. We match profile and depth so the front elevation still reads correctly from the street.
Estate and postwar housing
Long straight runs, shallow overhangs, sometimes shared eaves with the neighbour. Simple work if the timber is sound. Less simple if a previous cap job has hidden twenty years of damp.

Fascia Capping and Overcladding
Capping is where roofline work earns its bad reputation. A thin plastic cover is nailed over the existing timber, the joint is sealed, and the old board carries on rotting in the dark with the gutter still bolted to it. It looks new for about five years.
Capping is not always wrong. If the timber is genuinely sound, dry and well fixed, an overclad is a legitimate cosmetic job and it costs less. The test is whether the board underneath can still carry a full gutter in heavy rain in ten years. We check that with the gutter off, not from a ladder photo.
What we will not do is cap over soft timber and call it a replacement. If the rafter feet are going, capping hides the evidence and adds weight. Full replacement is the answer, and our fascias, soffits & cladding services are priced on what the survey actually finds rather than on what is easiest to sell.
Every job carries a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before the team leaves. That applies to roofline work the same as it applies to a new roof.

Replacement for Damaged Roofline Boards
The signs are ordinary. Peeling paint that comes back within a year. A gutter that has tipped forward. Green staining down the render below the eaves. Birds getting into the roof through a gap at the soffit. Screws that no longer hold.
Full replacement means the old boards come off entirely. Rafter ends get checked, cut back and spliced where the timber has gone. New boards fix into sound wood, ventilation is built in, gutters are rehung to fall, and the old material leaves with us.
We are family run, our own roofers do the work, and Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs. He answers the phone himself, day, night or weekend. If you want it looked at, we will look at it and tell you straight what it needs.
