A Cranleigh roof that has been cleared properly looks like a roof again: tiles sitting flat and interlocked, valleys open, gutters running away in a downpour instead of sagging under a wet mat of moss.
The Essentials
- Moss comes off by hand, tile by tile, and we never pressure wash a roof.
- Gutters, valleys and downpipes are cleared and flushed as part of the same visit.
- A biocide treatment goes on afterwards so the growth is slower coming back.
- Free survey with a drone view where it helps, then a fixed price in writing.
- Cracked, slipped or laminating tiles get reported with photographs before anything else happens.
- Every job carries a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before we leave.

Roof Moss Removal Methods
Roof moss removal in Cranleigh is done by hand scraping the growth off the tiles, clearing the debris out of the valleys and gutters, then treating the surface so it stays clear. That's the whole job, and we don't pressure wash a roof to get there.
Moss holds water against the tile and pushes it up off its lap. Once the wind gets under a lifted tile, you've got a slipped tile and a wet ceiling below. Pulling the moss off early is cheap. Waiting until tiles are broken isn't.
We work down the roof rather than up it, so nothing we've loosened gets dragged back over clean tile. Loose moss comes off with a scraper shaped to the tile profile. Anything stubborn gets softened first rather than forced. On a brittle old concrete tile, force is what cracks it.
Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, and the honest position is that some roofs shouldn't be cleaned at all. If the tiles are laminating and shedding grit, cleaning them just speeds that up. We'll say so and price the covering instead.

Free Survey and Quote
Call the number and a real person answers, day, night or weekend. Scott usually picks up himself. There's no call centre and no form that sits in a queue for three days.
The survey is free and there's no obligation. We get up and look properly, and we'll fly a drone over the ridge and the back slopes where a ladder view tells you nothing. You get photographs of what we found, not a verbal summary.
Then you get an honest fixed price in writing. If a small repair and a moss clear is all the roof needs, that's what we quote. We don't hard sell roof coatings, and we don't turn a cleaning job into a re-roof because the van's already there.
Every job carries a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before the team leaves. It covers repairs, not only new roofs. If something isn't right inside those 25 years, we come back and put it right. We're fully insured with Public Liability cover, and the work is done by our own local roofers.
Roof Tiles, Slate and Concrete Roofs for Cranleigh Homes
Cranleigh has a bit of everything. There's Victorian and Edwardian stock along the High Street and Horsham Road, post-war and sixties semis out towards Parkland Grove and Knowle Lane, and newer estates off Alfold Road with modern interlocking concrete tiles. Each one behaves differently under a scraper.
Concrete Interlocking Tiles
These are the most common thing we clean around the village. They're tough, but the sand-cement face weathers open with age and moss roots into it. We scrape with the profile, never across the nib. Where a tile has already gone soft, it's replaced rather than cleaned.
Clay Plain Tiles and Slate
Older Cranleigh cottages and the properties nearer the Common often run clay plain tiles or natural slate. Both are thinner and less forgiving. Clay peg tiles crack at the nib if you lever them. Slate delaminates. On those roofs we go slower, work off boards and staging, and replace anything we break at our cost.
Shaded and North-Facing Slopes
Cranleigh is a wooded parish, and the tree cover round Bookhurst Road and the Downs Link makes a real difference. North-facing slopes under overhanging limes and oaks hold damp for weeks. Those elevations grow moss back fastest, so they get the heaviest treatment and the closest attention.

Manual Scraping and Debris Clearance
Hand scraping is the only removal method we use. It's slower than a lance and it's the reason your tiles survive.
Getting the Moss Off
Two people work the slope, one scraping and one bagging. Ridges, hips and valleys get done separately because that's where the depth sits. We don't tip a roof's worth of moss into your borders and call it mulch. It goes into bags and off site.
Gutters, Valleys and Downpipes
Cleaning a roof without clearing the gutters is pointless. Everything you've loosened ends up in the gutter run and then in the outlet. So we clear gutters, valleys and downpipes as part of the job and flush them through to prove they run. Rainwater sizing follows BS EN 12056, and if a gutter is undersized for the slope above it we'll tell you.
Checking What the Moss Was Hiding
Moss covers up a lot. Once it's off we walk the roof and note slipped tiles, cracked mortar bedding, failed pointing on the chimney and tired flashings. Fixing and repointing follows BS 5534 for fixing and wind uplift. You get the list with the photographs, and you decide what happens next.
Biocide Treatment and Moss Prevention
Scraping takes the moss off. It doesn't take the spores out of the surface, and on a shaded Surrey roof that's most of the problem. So once the tiles are clear and dry, we apply a biocide treatment across the whole slope.
How long does it last? On an open, sunny roof you'll typically get several clear years before anything visible returns, and on a heavily shaded slope under trees it's less, which is why we'll say plainly what your roof is likely to do rather than promise a number.
The treatment needs dry weather and time to work. It doesn't strip the roof clean on the day. Algae and lichen die back and weather off over the following weeks. Anyone telling you a roof looks brand new by teatime is selling you a pressure washer.
Trimming back overhanging branches, keeping gutters running and checking the roof every couple of years does more for moss than any spray. We'd rather tell you that than book you in annually.
Soft Washing and Steam Cleaning in Cranleigh
Where a roof needs more than scraping, we soft wash it: low pressure, controlled, no water forced under the laps. High pressure blasts the surface off concrete tiles and drives water into the roof space. We don't do it, and we won't be talked into it.
If you're searching for roof moss removal close to home in Cranleigh, we're on village roofs most weeks, from Ewhurst Road through to the lanes out past Rowly. Our own roofers do the work, so the person who quotes it is the person on the ladder.
Whether you need a roof moss removal in Cranleigh or a roof moss removal in Ash & Ash Vale, we cover the whole area, and it's the same team either way. Our full range of roof moss removal services covers cleaning, gutter clearance and the repairs that turn up underneath.
Soft washing suits a sound roof with surface staining. Hand scraping suits heavy moss. Most Cranleigh jobs need both, in that order, and the survey tells us which slope needs what.
