Don't Just Take Our Word For It

The advice on this page comes from the same team Surrey homeowners rate five stars on Google, in Woking, Shamley Green and Chiddingfold. After more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, most of our pitched roofing work still comes the old-fashioned way: a neighbour pointing over the fence and saying give them a call. You can read all our reviews, word for word.

Pitched roofing in Woking runs in a set order: a call answered by a real person, a free survey of the slope from ground, loft and drone where it helps, a fixed price in writing, then the work itself staged so the house stays watertight every night.

In Short

  • Repairs are quoted as repairs, with slipped tiles, ridge bedding, verge and batten faults each priced on what the roof actually needs.
  • Fixings and battens are set out to BS 5534, with eaves and ridge ventilation to BS 5250 on any re-cover.
  • Leadwork is specified by code, Code 4 for most flashings and Code 5 for back gutters and valley linings, in lengths that will not split.
  • Re-roofs are worked one slope at a time, sheeted down each evening, so you keep your rooms and your parking.

Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, still answers the phone himself day or night, and backs every job with a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, the same promise that stands behind our emergency roofing services Woking homeowners call on out of hours.

Pitched Roof Repairs

Most pitched roof work in Woking starts as a repair rather than a replacement, and a repair is worth doing properly when the structure underneath is sound. A slipped tile usually means a corroded nail or a perished batten, not a failed roof. The fixing schedule is worked out against BS 5534, which sets how tiles and slates are held down against wind uplift, so replacements go back mechanically fixed rather than simply laid back into place.

Typical faults on Surrey pitched roofs are narrow and identifiable:

  • Slipped or cracked plain tiles and slates, usually from nail fatigue in the top two courses
  • Ridge and hip tiles loose in old sand and cement bedding, which is re-bedded or dry-fixed with a mechanically fixed ridge system
  • Verge mortar cracking away, replaced with a dry verge or re-pointed with a 3:1 sand and cement mix
  • Battens undersized or rotten, replaced with graded 25mm x 38mm or 25mm x 50mm treated batten depending on rafter spacing
  • Torn underlay at the eaves, patched or fitted with an eaves carrier tray so water discharges into the gutter

Where a targeted fix will hold, that is what gets quoted. If a smaller repair will do, we say so rather than pushing a new roof at you.

Lead Flashing and Valleys for Woking Homes

Woking has a wide mix of housing stock, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate and cut valleys to post-war and modern estate housing on concrete interlocking tiles. The abutments and valleys differ between them, and so does the leadwork. Lead is specified by code to Lead Sheet Association guidance: Code 4 for most soakers and cover flashings, Code 5 where a chimney back gutter or a valley lining takes standing water and foot traffic.

Individual lead pieces are kept within recommended lengths, generally no more than 1.5 metres per piece for flashings, with welted laps between them. That single detail is what stops the thermal movement that splits over-long lead along its fixing line after a few summers. Flashings are chased into the mortar joint to a depth of around 25mm, wedged at roughly 450mm centres and pointed, rather than smeared over the brickwork with mastic.

Valleys are either lined in lead over a properly supported valley board with tilting fillets, or fitted with a GRP valley trough where the original detail allows. Both need clear discharge into a gutter sized under BS EN 12056, otherwise the valley backs up in heavy rain and finds the nearest lap. Whether you need pitched roofing in Woking or roof repairs in Woking, we cover the whole town and the villages around it, and if you would rather start with a general roofer in Woking to look at several jobs at once, that is the same visit.

Pitched Roof Installation

A full re-roof is the job people worry about living through, so it is worth setting out how it is staged. Work runs one elevation or one slope at a time wherever the roof allows, so the house is never fully open. Nothing is stripped that cannot be made watertight again the same day, and tarpaulins are dressed over the exposed area before the team leaves site.

Stage one, survey and specification

The roof is inspected from ground level, from the loft and from above, including a drone view where access makes that sensible. Rafter size and spacing, batten condition, ventilation paths and existing tile type are all recorded, and the tile or slate is matched or an honest alternative named. The fixed price arrives in writing.

Stage two, access and protection

Scaffold goes up with a working lift at gutter height and edge protection to the roof line. Debris netting and a chute keep the strip contained. Drives, borders and paths are boarded or sheeted before a single tile is lifted, and the skip is positioned to keep at least one parking space usable where the frontage allows.

Stage three, strip and re-cover

Old covering and battens come off in sections. New breathable underlay is laid with the correct drape and lap, counter-battens are used where the design calls for them, and new treated battens are set out to the tile gauge and fixed to BS 5534. Ventilation is provided at eaves and ridge in line with BS 5250 so the cold roof space stays dry. Tiles or slates are then loaded out and laid up the slope with the leadwork and dry ridge finished as each elevation closes.

Stage four, finish and handover

Gutters are cleared and checked to fall, the loft is inspected from inside, the site is swept and magnet-rolled for nails, and the scaffold comes down. The 25-year written workmanship guarantee is handed over before the team leaves.

Noise is real during the strip, and that is the loud part of the week rather than the whole of it. Nobody needs to move out, no room is taken over, and the loft is only entered when we tell you in advance. Our pitched roofing services follow the same order on every job, whether that is a small bungalow slope or a full two-storey re-roof, and Approved Document L's 25 percent rule is priced into the quote from the start rather than raised halfway through.
