Everyone asks whether the scaffold can be left off the quote, and the honest answer depends on the stack, the pitch and how long the pointing will take.
At a Glance
- A low gable-end stack can sometimes be repointed from a mobile tower on firm, level ground.
- Most stacks need a proper scaffold with a lift above the ridge and a platform around the brickwork.
- Roof ladders with a ridge hook suit short tasks, not a full day of raking out and repointing.
- A leaning ladder against the stack is not an access method and we will not work off one.
- If the scaffold goes up, use it: flashings, flaunching and guttering are cheaper done in the same visit.

Is it possible to repoint a chimney without scaffolding?
Sometimes, yes. A low chimney on a shallow roof, reached safely from a tower or a properly rigged roof ladder, can be repointed without a full scaffold. On most houses, though, the height, the pitch and the time the job takes mean scaffolding is the only sensible and safe way to reach the stack.

What decides whether the stack can be reached without a scaffold
The question is never really about the pointing. It is about how a person stands still, both hands free, for hours, at height, in wind, with a bucket of mortar. That is what rules the access in or out.
The things that decide it are simple enough to list:
- Height of the stack above the eaves. A short stack a metre above the ridge is a different job to a tall Victorian stack standing three metres proud.
- Roof pitch and covering. Steep clay plain tiles or brittle old slate will not take weight in the way a shallow concrete tile roof will.
- Where the chimney sits. A ridge stack with roof on both sides is far harder to work around than a gable-end stack you can reach from the side.
- What is underneath. A conservatory, a flat roof, a glass canopy or a neighbour's boundary changes everything about how you set up.
- How much work there is. Raking out and repointing four faces of brickwork is a long job with a lot of trips up and down.
Whether you need chimney work or chimney work in Guildford, we cover the whole area, and the honest answer on access changes house by house. Two places on the same street can need two different setups.

The access methods that genuinely work, and the one that does not
There are a handful of legitimate ways to get to a chimney. A full independent scaffold with a lift above the ridge and a working platform round the stack is the standard, and for good reason: it gives a level place to stand, somewhere to put materials, and edge protection while the mortar goes off.
A mobile tower can work on a gable-end stack on a bungalow or a low extension where the ground is firm and level and the stack is within reach from the platform. Roof ladders with a proper ridge hook, plus fall protection, will get a roofer to a stack for a short task: a cracked flaunching cap, a slipped flashing, a pot that needs bedding. They are not a place to spend a day repointing.
The one that does not work is a leaning ladder against the brickwork with one hand on the rungs. It is unsteady, it loads the stack you are trying to repair, and it means working one-handed on something that needs two. We will not do it, and nobody should be offering it.

Why the mortar itself argues for a proper platform
Repointing is not smearing mortar into a gap. The old joints are raked out to a decent depth, the brickwork is brushed and damped down as needed, and a mortar mix suited to the brick is pressed in and struck to a weather-shedding finish. Rushed pointing on a soft old stack, done in a hard mix, will crack away in a couple of winters and let more water in than it kept out.
That takes time and both hands. It also takes judgement about what else needs doing while the access is up: the flaunching around the pots, the lead flashings and soakers where the stack meets the tiles, brickwork that has spalled and needs cutting out. Being up there properly is how those things get spotted rather than left for the next call-out. Our full range of chimney work services is normally more sensible to sort in one visit than to keep coming back to.
If the stack is in poor enough condition that repointing alone will not settle it, a partial rebuild is the better answer, and we will say so rather than pointing over a problem. Structural work of that kind falls under Approved Document A, and it is worth knowing that before the first brick comes out.

What we tell people when they ask us to skip the scaffold
Most people ask because of cost, and that is fair. Scaffolding is a real line on a quote and nobody enjoys paying for something they cannot see the benefit of. So we look at it properly on the free survey, including a drone view where it helps, and we say which of three things is true: the job can be done off a tower, the job needs a scaffold, or the job is small enough for a short roof-ladder visit.
Where a scaffold does go up, we would rather it earns its keep. If the guttering is tired, a flashing needs redressing or a few tiles have slipped, doing them while the access is there saves paying twice. Searching for a roofer near you across Surrey and the Wey Valley, you will get Scott on the phone at whatever hour you ring, and he has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs deciding exactly these questions.
Every job leaves with a 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before the team goes, and that applies to chimney repointing the same as it does to a new roof. Part of standing behind work for that long is refusing to do it off a ladder in the first place.
