There is no single figure for an emergency roofer, and anyone who quotes one down the phone before seeing the roof is guessing.
The Short Version
- The price is driven by access, the covering, how far the water has travelled and what has to come off.
- A temporary make-safe and a permanent repair are two separate pieces of work, and two separate prices.
- Chimneys, leadwork and valleys cost more because they are detail work, not because they are urgent.
- A cheap patch that hides a wet roof deck ends up costing plaster and timber as well as tiles.
- Every price is put in writing after a free survey, with no charge and no obligation.
Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs and still answers the phone himself, day, night or weekend; whether you need emergency roofing or emergency roofing services Godalming, we cover the whole area, with a 25 year written workmanship guarantee on every job.

How much does an emergency roofer cost?
The cost of an emergency roofer depends on what has actually failed, how much of the roof is involved, how safely it can be reached and whether the visit is a temporary make-safe or a permanent repair. A small make-safe sits at the low end. A structural failure over several rooms sits far higher.

What an emergency call-out is actually paying for
An emergency price is not the same shape as a planned repair price. You are paying for someone to stop what they are doing, load the right materials rather than the nearest ones, and get on a roof in weather that most work would be postponed for. That is labour at an awkward hour, access equipment, and materials bought in a hurry.
Whether you need emergency roofing or emergency roofing in Guildford, we cover the whole area, and the way the price is built up does not change from one town to the next. What changes is the roof in front of us. A slipped tile over a bedroom and a stripped ridge over a whole terrace are both emergencies, and the gap between them is enormous.
There is also a difference between stopping water and fixing the cause. A tarpaulin dressed properly over a hole buys weeks. It does not put the roof back. Most genuine emergencies end up as two pieces of work, and it is fair to know which one you are being quoted for.
The things that move the number up or down
Over 36 years on Surrey roofs the same handful of factors decide the figure nearly every time:
- Access. A two storey front elevation on a level drive is straightforward. A rear roof over a conservatory, a steep bank or a shared alley needs scaffolding or a tower, and that is often the largest single line.
- Pitch and covering. Plain tile, slate, concrete interlocking and torch-on felt all behave differently under foot and take different amounts of time to make watertight.
- How far the water has travelled. Water rarely enters where it appears. A stain in a hallway can trace back to a chimney flashing three metres away, and finding it properly takes time that guessing does not.
- What has to come off. Sound battens and felt keep the job small. Rotten timber, perished sarking or a failed valley turn a repair into a section of re-roof.
- Weather and daylight. Work in wind and rain is slower and needs more temporary protection.
Chimneys, leadwork and valleys are usually the dearer emergencies because they are detail work. Lead has to be sized, welted and clipped to Lead Sheet Association guidance rather than folded over and sealed, and mastic smeared into a flashing is the repair we get called back to undo more than any other.

Temporary make-safe against a permanent repair
A make-safe is cheap relative to the damage it prevents. Sheeting, battening down, clearing loose tiles that could fall, isolating a blocked outlet. It is the right first spend when the weather is still against you or when the full extent cannot be seen safely in the dark.
The permanent repair follows once the roof is dry and can be inspected properly, sometimes with a drone view where a ladder would tell us less. That is when the honest fixed price goes in writing, with no obligation and no charge for the survey. If a smaller repair will do the job, we say so. We do not turn a lifted ridge into a new roof, and we do not push coatings.
Our emergency roofing services run 24/7, and a real person answers the phone at three in the morning as readily as at three in the afternoon. Scott answers it himself more often than not. Emergencies go to the front of the queue, and the work is done by our own roofers rather than a stranger sent from an agency list.
Where a cheap emergency repair costs more later
The bills that hurt are almost never the first call-out. They are the ones where a fast patch held for one winter, the water kept moving inside the roof, and the timber went soft where nobody looked. By the time the ceiling comes down, the price is plaster and joinery as well as tiles.
Fixing done properly means tiles and slates fixed to BS 5534 so the wind cannot lift them again, flat roof work to BS 6229, and ventilation kept right under BS 5250 so you do not swap a leak for condensation. Rainwater goods are sized to BS EN 12056 rather than replaced like for like when the old ones were undersized to begin with. None of that costs much more on the day. It is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that returns.
If you are searching for a roofer close to home after a storm, our own local roofers are already out across Surrey and the Wey Valley, so someone can usually be with you the same day. Every job leaves behind a 25 year written workmanship guarantee, handed over before we go, covering repairs as well as new roofs. If it is not right inside 25 years, we come back and put it right.
Whether you need emergency roofing or emergency roofing services Woking, we cover the whole area, and the price you are given in writing is the price you pay.
