Don't Just Take Our Word For It

The advice on this page comes from the same team Surrey homeowners rate five stars on Google, in Woking, Bramley and across the wider county. After more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, most of our chimney work work still comes the old-fashioned way: a neighbour pointing over the fence and saying give them a call. You can read all our reviews, word for word.

A fire that draws properly, a dry chimney breast, and a stack head that sheds water instead of soaking it up.

Key Points

  • A CCTV look up any flue that has been drawing badly.
  • Repointing raked out to twice the joint width and refilled with a mix matched to the brick, not a hard modern mortar.
  • Flaunching recast in a 3:1 mix and dressed to throw water clear of the pot.
  • Lead flashings in code 4 or code 5 sheet, in bays under 1.5 metres, to Lead Sheet Association guidance.
  • 316 or 904 grade stainless liners sized to the appliance, top-clamped and sealed at a register plate.
  • Free survey, drone view where it helps, fixed price in writing with no obligation.

Scott has spent more than 36 years on Surrey roofs, still answers the phone himself, and backs chimney work and our pitched roofing services Ash & Ash Vale with the same 25-year written workmanship guarantee.

Fireplace and Stove Support in Ash & Ash Vale

Most calls about a fireplace that smokes back into the room turn out to be a chimney problem rather than an appliance problem. A stove throttled by a partially collapsed flue, a register plate with gaps around the liner, a missing air supply, or flaunching that has broken up and is letting rain sit in the head of the stack all show up as smoke in the living room. The chimney work we do supports the appliance rather than replacing it.

From the roof side that means the stack, the flashings and the flue route: repointing the exposed brickwork, recasting the flaunching in a 3:1 sharp sand and cement mix dressed to shed water clear of the pot, replacing lead flashings to Lead Sheet Association guidance with code 4 or code 5 sheet in bays no longer than 1.5 metres, and making the liner termination weathertight at the top. Lead soakers and a proper stepped flashing into the raked mortar joints last decades. Cement fillets pushed into the same position crack within a couple of winters.

Where the stack passes through a pitched roof, the tiles and battens around it are checked and refixed to BS 5534 while access is up, since fixing specifications for wind uplift are the reason a repaired stack area stays put. Every job we carry out is covered by the same 25-year written workmanship guarantee, handed to you in writing before the team leaves, and that includes repairs, not only full re-roofs.

Chimney Lining and Flue Solutions in Ash & Ash Vale

Older stacks around Ash and Ash Vale were often built with unlined brick flues and a lime parge coat that has long since fallen away. That leaves smoke and combustion products in contact with mortar joints, which is where staining on bedroom chimney breasts starts. Lining restores a continuous, gas-tight route from appliance to terminal.

Flexible 316 or 904 grade stainless liner is the usual answer for a wood burner, 904 where the fuel and the running temperatures are harder on the steel. The liner is sized to the appliance outlet, dropped from the top with a nose cone rather than dragged from below, supported on a top clamp under the pot, sealed at the base with a register plate, and back-filled with vermiculite where the void needs insulating so the flue gases stay warm enough to draw properly. On flues with more than one offset a survey comes first, because a tight double bend decides the liner diameter that will physically pass.

If you need chimney work in Ash & Ash Vale or metal roofing in Ash & Ash Vale, the same team covers the whole area, which matters when a stack repair meets a zinc or aluminium roof detail and the two have to be flashed together properly.

Service Areas and Property Types

We work across Surrey and the Wey Valley, and Ash and Ash Vale bring a mix of stock: Victorian and Edwardian terraces with shared party-wall stacks and multiple pots, interwar semis with rendered stacks, and later estate housing where the stack sits low on the slope and takes the full run of water off the roof above it.

  • Shared and party-wall stacks: pots identified to the correct flue before any capping, so a neighbour's appliance is not sealed off.
  • Rendered stacks: hollow render tapped off and made good, rather than skimmed over while the brickwork behind stays wet.
  • Redundant stacks: capped with a vented cowl so the flue keeps breathing and the breast dries out.
  • Tall exposed stacks: assessed for movement and lean before repointing, because pointing a stack that has structural movement wastes your money.

Where the brickwork is that far gone, a rebuild is the honest answer and structural work of that sort is covered by building regulations, as GOV.UK guidance on when you need approval sets out. Work is done by our own local roofers, not subcontracted in.

Chimney Repairs and Repointing

Repointing is not decorative. Mortar joints in a stack are the weather barrier, and once they have weathered back 10 to 15 millimetres, water tracks straight into the brick and moves down into the roof space.

Step one, survey

Free survey with a proper look at the stack, including a drone view where scaffolding would otherwise be needed just to see the head. Mortar is tested by hand for softness and the flaunching, pots, flashings and brick faces are recorded.

Step two, fixed price in writing

You get an honest fixed price in writing, no obligation, no charge for the quote. If repointing and a new flaunching will do the job, we say so rather than quoting a rebuild.

Step three, the work

Joints raked out to at least twice their width, brushed and damped, then repointed in a mix matched to the brick, softer for older soft-fired stock so the mortar sacrifices itself rather than the brick face. Flaunching recast and weathered. Flashings renewed in lead where they have failed.

Step four, handover

Site cleared, debris off the roof and out of the gutters, and the 25-year written workmanship guarantee handed over before we go. If something is not right inside those 25 years, we come back and put it right.

Smoke Testing and Safety Checks

A smoke test tells you whether the flue you have just paid to line or repoint is actually sound. Smoke is introduced at the base with the appliance opening sealed, the terminal is watched for a clean plume, and the flue is then held under smoke while every room the stack passes is checked for leakage at the breast, the loft and any adjoining property.

  • Draw check: confirms the flue pulls rather than spills at the appliance opening.
  • Integrity check: finds cross-leakage into a bedroom or a neighbour's flue, which is the failure that matters most in a terrace.
  • Termination check: pot height and cowl clearance looked at against the ridge and any nearby roof, since a short stack in a sheltered spot never draws well.

Findings are given to you plainly, with photographs where the defect is somewhere you cannot see. A real person answers the phone, day, night or weekend, and emergencies go to the front of the queue.
